Today I highlight one important aspect of a healthy pregnancy through a nutritional therapy lens. One of the best things you can do to begin improving foundational health is to focus on consuming adequate healthy fats. Eliminate the processed, refined nut and seed oils like canola, sunflower, safflower, corn, or peanut and eliminate unnecessary inflammation. This is great advice for anyone looking to improve their health. Pregnant women may especially benefit because of the impact fats have on hormones.

This recipe features high quality wild-caught canned fish, a convenient and cost efficient pantry staple, which supports a healthy fatty acid status. Ample essential fatty acids help us stay satiated for longer and keeps skin healthy and glowing. They are critical for hormone production, an optimal inflammatory response, and absorption of vitamins A,D,E,& K.

Sardine Fritters / Salmon Cakes

  • 2-4 cans [16oz] of wild-caught sardines or wild-caught salmon, strained [I like Wild Planet]
  • 3/4 cup almond flour or meal
  • 3 small eggs
  • 3/4 – 1 cup fresh herbs [cilantro, green onion, parsley, dill, etc]
  • Pinch of salt, healthy grind black pepper, garlic powder or cayenne to taste
  • 4 tablespoons oil to cook [avocado oil, ghee, coconut oil]
salmon and healthy fats

Add the cans of fish and herbs into a food processor and combine well. Place this mixture into a bowl with all remaining ingredients. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a cast iron pan. Form the mixture into 4 palm sized patties and cook on medium-low heat about 3-5 minutes on each side. Look for a browned and slightly crispy texture. Serve with roasted sweet potato, steamed veggies, and enjoy!

Nutritional Therapy for Pregnancy

GI Map

By seeking nutritional counsel before pregnancy, a woman may optimize her foundational health. A mother may therefore greatly improve her experience before, during, and after birth. Some questions to ask to determine if this work and functional testing may be a benefit include:

  • Do you suspect food sensitivities or intolerances?
  • Do you have a history of GI symptoms like bloating, constipation, heartburn, or acid reflux?
  • Have you experienced endocrine dysfunction like thyroid, pituitary, adrenal, or menstrual issues?
  • Do you suspect pathogens like parasites, candida/yeast, or bacterial imbalances?
  • How confident are you in the status of your foundational health? This includes diet, digestion, blood sugar regulation, mineral balance, healthy fats, and hydration.

With this functional and holistic health perspective, we support the body’s innate wisdom, honor the processes, and encourage one’s unique journey in healing and rebalancing.
